Nutrition - Presentation
Science Resource Description
In this educational presentation, students delve into the fundamentals of nutrition, focusing on the vital role it plays in maintaining a healthy body and supporting growth. They will learn about the seven essential food groups and the importance of consuming the right amounts of each to achieve a balanced diet. The presentation highlights six key nutrients that are necessary for various bodily functions, including proteins for growth and repair, vitamins and minerals for preventing illness, carbohydrates for energy, water for cleansing and cooling the body, fats for energy and warmth, and fibres for digestive health.
Students will explore the various food groups, which are categorised based on the predominant nutrients they contain. These groups include fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, oils, dairy, protein foods, and treats, which should be consumed sparingly. The presentation encourages students to understand the nutritional content of different foods and apply this knowledge by completing a table that outlines the roles and food sources of each nutrient. Additionally, the session includes practical activities such as comparing food labels to determine the healthiest options and experimenting to find out which juice has the most vitamin C. The presentation also touches on animal nutrition, teaching students to classify animals as carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores based on their dietary habits. By the end of the lesson, students should be able to name food groups, identify them in various foods, create a balanced meal, and classify animals by their diet, enhancing their understanding of nutrition in both humans and animals.
