The Phase 3 Assessment Student Sheet is a resource designed to evaluate a learner's ability to recognize graphemes and associate them with their corresponding phonemes in phonics. The assessment begins with an oral exercise where the learner is asked to articulate the phoneme that corresponds to each listed grapheme. The graphemes included cover a range of sounds and combinations, starting from single-letter graphemes such as 'j', 'v', 'w', through to more complex ones like 'qu', 'ch', 'sh', and onto digraphs and trigraphs including 'ai', 'ee', 'igh', and 'oa'. This is followed by a challenge where, if the learner finds the task easy, they will be asked to reverse the process: the assessor will say a phoneme aloud and the student will then write down the appropriate grapheme.

It is important to note that the assessment is adaptable based on the learner's proficiency. If the student finds it difficult to recognize the graphemes, the assessor is instructed not to proceed with the writing portion of the assessment. This ensures that the assessment is tailored to the learner's current level, focusing on recognition before moving on to writing skills. The sheet includes a variety of sounds to test the learner's knowledge thoroughly, including vowel digraphs like 'ai', 'ee', 'oa', and 'oi', as well as r-controlled vowels such as 'ar' and 'or'. The assessment also covers consonant digraphs and trigraphs like 'th', 'ng', and 'igh', and other grapheme combinations including 'ur', 'ow', 'ear', 'air', and 'er' to provide a comprehensive check of the learner's phonemic awareness at Phase 3 of phonics learning.
