Handball - Lesson 6
Physical Education Resource Description
The sixth lesson plan for Year 6 in the Striver series is dedicated to handball, with the aim of enabling students to play a full-size game by utilising the skills they have developed in previous lessons. The session is designed to be engaging and interactive, with a clear set of learning objectives and success criteria. Pupils are expected to demonstrate their ability to dribble, shoot, intercept, pass, block, and score during a match situation. The lesson is well-equipped with necessary equipment and resources including cones, balls, coloured bibs or bands, a whistle, and music with a strong beat to keep the energy levels high.
The lesson begins with a dynamic warm-up lasting 10 minutes, featuring a variety of ball handling exercises such as rolling the ball through the legs, fast ball handling, tossing the ball in different positions, and dribbling around cones. To challenge the pupils further, extension activities are provided, including tossing a ball with feet while sitting and catching it while standing, and dribbling through a slalom of cones. The main activity for the next 30 minutes is a handball competition, encouraging pupils to apply the rules they've learned and to reflect on their performance, including their preferred positions and the qualities that make a good defender or attacker. The session concludes with a 10-minute cool down, where pupils play 'Bop It Handball style' to music, incorporating movements related to handball actions such as defending, attacking, and celebrating a goal, ensuring they end the lesson on a fun and active note.
