Handball - Lesson 5
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of a Year 6 handball series from the Striver Lesson Plans, the objective is to develop students' goalkeeping skills. This session is designed to build upon the abilities honed in previous lessons and apply them in a match scenario. The success of the lesson is measured by the pupils' capacity to utilise their skills during a game and to demonstrate the specific competencies required to be an effective goalkeeper. Essential handball terms such as 'dribble', 'shoot', 'intercept', 'pass', 'block', and 'score' are highlighted as key vocabulary. The lesson requires basic equipment including balls and marker cones to set up the activities.
The lesson is structured to include a warm-up, main activities, and a cool-down. The warm-up consists of a 'Triangle Passing' drill where pupils work in groups of four to pass a handball in a triangular formation, promoting movement and coordination. The main part of the lesson is more intense, with pupils organised into groups to practice shooting at a goal marked out with cones, while a designated goalkeeper attempts to block the shots. This is followed by an exercise where pairs work on shooting and blocking in front of the goal, with attention given to the specific movements and positioning of the goalkeeper. The session concludes with a cool-down that includes a gentle jog, stretches, and exercises such as arm circles, side stretches, and leg stretches to ensure pupils' muscles are properly relaxed after the physical activity.
