Tennis - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 4 Tennis unit, as part of the Striver Lesson Plans, is designed to enhance pupils' tennis skills through a series of focused lessons. The unit centres around developing the ready position, mastering forehand and backhand shots, understanding the flight of the ball and reacting to it, as well as learning the correct positions and movements on the court. Students will have the chance to apply these skills in a rally setting, which allows them to demonstrate their learning in a practical context. The unit is structured to build upon transferrable skills from previous game-based units, ensuring a progression in pupils' overall sporting abilities.
Each lesson within the unit is crafted with specific learning objectives and success criteria. The first lesson aims to teach pupils the ready position and basic forehand and backhand shots. Subsequent lessons focus on maintaining a rally, interpreting the ball's flight, and effective court movement and positioning. By the end of the unit, pupils should be able to keep a rally going and utilize their skills in a competitive situation. Teaching tips provided suggest that lessons are designed for one-hour sessions, including time for changing, and emphasize the importance of modelling skills, assessing individual pupil needs, and adjusting the timing as necessary. Teachers are encouraged to tailor the lessons to the needs of their pupils, providing additional support or advancing to game situations as appropriate.
