Tag Rugby - Lesson 6
Physical Education Resource Description
In the sixth lesson of a Year 3 tag rugby series, students are expected to apply the skills they have learned in previous sessions into a full game of tag rugby. The learning objective is clear: to be able to transfer and utilise the skills acquired in previous games into a competitive scenario. The success of the lesson is measured by the pupils' ability to adapt these skills during the game. Key vocabulary from earlier lessons is revisited to reinforce learning, and the necessary equipment includes a class set of belts and tags, cones, and rugby balls.
The lesson is structured into three main parts: a warm-up, the main game, and a cool-down. During the 10-minute warm-up, pupils practice passing the rugby ball to their peers on the outer line of a rectangular area, which later serves as the game field. They switch roles after a set time or number of passes, with the possibility of increasing the difficulty by having pupils throw with their weaker side or navigate through gates. The 30-minute main game allows pupils to demonstrate their skills in a match, with teams and pitch sizes adjusted to suit the number of participants and space available. Finally, in the 10-minute cool-down, pupils participate in a 'Play Time Circle' exercise, which involves passing and catching in groups of five to gently wind down from the activity. The session concludes with a reflection on the new challenges faced during an actual game and the importance of communication on the field.
