Tag Rugby - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 3 Tag Rugby unit offers a structured approach to teaching the fundamentals of the sport to pupils, with a focus on key skills such as evading opponents, tagging, ball control, accurate passing, and safe reception of the ball on the move. The unit is designed to build upon the general games skills that students have learned at ages 5-6 and 6-7. Over the course of the unit, pupils will have the opportunity to put their learned skills into practice through game situations, culminating in a game of tag rugby where they can showcase their abilities in a competitive environment.
The unit is broken down into a series of lessons, each with specific learning objectives and success criteria. The first lesson concentrates on evading and tagging opponents, with pupils developing the ability to run and change direction at speed while identifying gaps between defenders. Subsequent lessons focus on maintaining control of the ball while evading opponents, passing and catching the ball accurately, and applying these skills in motion. The final lesson aims to bring together all the skills learned in a practical game setting. Teaching tips within the unit suggest that instructors should model skills, adjust lesson timings to accommodate for changing and equipment setup, and assess individual or small group needs for skill development or application in game situations.
