Gymnastics 2 - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
In the second lesson of Gymnastics 2 for Year 3, the primary objective is for pupils to learn how to perform forward rolls in a safe manner. The success criteria set out for the lesson are that pupils should be able to take weight on their hands, support their body weight by pushing off from their hands, and roll with their chin tucked in. Key vocabulary such as 'rolling', 'forward roll', 'weight', 'tuck shape', 'low level shape', 'entrance', and 'exit' are introduced to help pupils understand and communicate about the movements they will be performing. To facilitate the lesson, equipment such as safety or gymnastics mats and cones to mark the safety area perimeter are required.
The lesson commences with a ten-minute warm-up involving gentle stretching exercises led by the class teacher, followed by a game called 'Play, Pause, Eject' which encourages pupils to engage in various movements and balance exercises. The main activity lasts for thirty minutes and includes pupils demonstrating the ready position at their mats, understanding the difference between matching and mirroring, and practicing forward rolls under the guidance of the teacher. Pupils are encouraged to take turns performing the forward rolls, with extensions and variations provided for those who need additional support or challenge. The lesson wraps up with a ten-minute cool-down session where pupils play 'My Teacher Says' and reflect on what they have learned and how they can improve further in the next lesson.
