Football - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 3 football unit offers a structured approach to teaching the fundamentals of the sport to pupils. The unit is meticulously planned to ensure a progression of skills, starting with ball control and dribbling, and advancing through to turning, passing, receiving, shooting, and goalkeeping. Each lesson is designed to build on the pupils' existing abilities, enhancing their skills and understanding of the game. The unit culminates with the pupils applying their developed skills in an actual game of football, allowing them to experience the sport in a competitive context.
Within the unit, specific learning objectives and success criteria are outlined for each lesson. For instance, the initial lessons focus on controlling the ball with the correct body part and keeping it close while dribbling. Subsequent lessons introduce turning with the ball, passing and receiving with the inside of the foot, and eventually shooting and goalkeeping techniques. Teaching tips are provided to ensure effective instruction, which includes modelling the skills, adjusting lesson timings, and assessing individual or small group needs for skill development. The unit is designed to be flexible, allowing teachers to tailor the content to the needs of their pupils and the duration of their lessons.
