Games 4 - Lesson 5
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of the Year 2 Games series, the focus is on enhancing pupils' dribbling skills, an essential part of basketball. The learning objectives are straightforward: pupils should be able to dribble a ball forwards and in various directions with control. Key vocabulary terms such as 'basketball', 'bouncing', 'control', 'fingertips', 'dribbling', 'passing', and 'opponent' are introduced to the children. The lesson requires equipment such as cones, size 3 or 4 basketballs, and bibs. The warm-up activity involves pupils running and dribbling a ball around a central cone, with the emphasis on keeping the ball continuously bouncing and looking ahead in the direction of travel.
The main part of the lesson lasts 30 minutes and includes activities like 'Swap In The Middle', where pupils dribble towards each other, exchange balls with a bounce pass, and continue to the opposite side. Another exercise called 'Stay In Line' has pupils dribbling to different coloured cones upon the teacher's whistle, ensuring ball control. The 'Compass Dribble' pairs up pupils to dribble around four cones set up as compass points, with variations to challenge their skills further. Key teaching points for these activities include looking up and forwards, using one hand to dribble, and maintaining the ball at hip height. The session concludes with a cool-down where pupils practice catching a ball after different numbers of bounces, encouraging reflection on the skills learned and any improvements made in their dribbling abilities.
