Dance - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
In the second lesson of the Year 2 dance curriculum, children are encouraged to unleash their creativity by constructing a short dance sequence inspired by the theme of a rocket. The learning objectives are clear: students should be able to use various movements to depict different sizes and shapes, delve into the dance elements of tempo, space, shape, and dynamic, and provide feedback to their peers using simple dance terminology with the aid of their teacher. A warm-up session is planned to get the pupils moving to music, exploring different travelling steps such as skipping and galloping, and responding to commands like changing tempo or mood. The main part of the lesson involves discussing the qualities of a rocket's movement and using this as a stimulus for the children to create their own dance phrases, either individually or in pairs, experimenting with speed, levels, and space.
The lesson is structured to allow for both guided learning and personal expression. Pupils are given the opportunity to work in pairs to choreograph a sequence of 3-4 movements, incorporating ideas such as slow motion walking, pencil jumps, and arcing steps. They are encouraged to think about their performance from an audience's perspective and to consider elements like mirroring or initiating movements at different times. The lesson culminates in a performance where each pair presents their dance phrase to the class, followed by constructive feedback focusing on the positive aspects and areas for improvement. A cool down session is included, repeating the 'Sparkler' activity from the previous lesson, with a focus on stretching and breathing exercises to relax the body after the energetic session. This holistic approach to teaching dance not only fosters physical development but also nurtures creativity and peer assessment skills in young learners.
