Jumping for height - Lesson Plan
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of the Year 5 Athletics unit, students will focus on mastering the art of jumping for height. The lesson objectives are clear and multifaceted: students will learn to replicate the basic technique required for high jumps, explore the differences between standing and running jumps, comprehend how timing impacts the height achieved, and enhance their ability to recognise and appreciate good jumping performances. To facilitate this learning, resources such as cones, hoops, and resource cards are employed alongside literacy elements including speed, explosive power, and coordination.
The lesson is structured with a series of dynamic activities, each with specific success criteria. During the warm-up 'Steal and Find', students work in pairs to challenge their quick decision-making and agility. The main activity involves jumping obstacles, where students practice fast footwork through ladders and focus on one-foot takeoffs with an arm swing. They also explore jumping over various obstacles and from different angles, discovering their strongest foot for takeoff and learning how to use their arms to maintain balance. The session progresses to jumping races, incorporating obstacle relay races to further encourage jumping for height with proper technique. The lesson concludes with a 'Roll a Dice' cool-down, where students mimic movements associated with dice rolls, integrating controlled actions with static stretches and learning about leg muscles like the quadriceps and hamstrings.
