Leadership group activities - Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
Physical Education Resource Description
In the third lesson of a series on leadership group activities, students are presented with a challenge named "Radioactive Isotopes". The objective is to work cohesively as a team to move 'deadly radioactive isotopes' from one bucket to another without entering the marked radioactive zone. Utilising ropes attached to the silver bucket, they must tip the contents, represented by balls, into a black safety bucket. The task is designed to encourage teamwork and problem-solving. To adjust the difficulty, the instructor can modify the number of ropes or set a time limit, or allow students to get closer to the activity area if needed. The equipment required includes two buckets, one with ropes and balls, and cones to mark the zone.
Another engaging activity is "Leaky Pipe", where students are split into teams and tasked with transporting water using only cups to a drainpipe, aiming to float a table tennis ball to the top. The drainpipe has holes, which adds a layer of complexity as they must fill it faster than it leaks. This activity can be made more challenging by turning it into a relay race or simplified by covering some holes with tape. Additionally, "Centipede" requires teams of four to navigate to a finish line with each member standing on two planks connected by ropes, promoting coordination and balance. "Square Dance" tests communication skills as blindfolded participants must form a square with a long rope. Finally, "Rope Run" involves the whole class running under a turning rope individually and then in increasingly larger groups, fostering timing and cooperation. These activities are adjustable in difficulty and aim to develop various teamwork and leadership skills.
