Max Maths, Year 1, Try it, Ordinal numbers
Maths Resource Description
In this engaging activity from the Max Maths Year 1 curriculum, students are introduced to ordinal numbers through the context of a friendly race involving the Max Maths team. The task requires children to understand and apply their knowledge of ordinal numbers to determine the positions of the team members. The positions of the racers are clearly listed, from Jade in 1st place (first) to Kim in 10th place (tenth).
Students are asked a series of questions to help them practise using ordinal numbers. For example, they need to identify who is running after Jade, which would be Han in 2nd place (second), and who is just before Theo, which would be Toby in 5th place (fifth). Other questions require the students to pinpoint who is in 5th place, which is Toby, and who is in 8th place, which is Ryan. They also need to determine who is sandwiched between specific racers, such as Toby and Samir, and between the 2nd and 4th positions. These exercises help solidify the concept of order in a sequence and the use of ordinal terms to describe positions within a group.
