Comparing numbers to 10,000,000 worksheet
Maths Resource Description
In an engaging and interactive activity designed to teach children how to order and compare numbers up to 10,000,000, students are provided with a hands-on learning experience. Activity 1 commences with each child receiving a number card that contains a 5, 6, or 7-digit figure which they are instructed to keep secret, except from an adult if assistance is needed. The children are then asked to disperse in a large open area such as a hall, playground, or field. The instructor gives out specific criteria, for instance, directing children with numbers less than 2,500,000 to stand on one side, and the others on the opposite side. After moving to their respective areas, the children form small groups to verify that each person is in the correct location by comparing their number cards. To ensure understanding, selected children are asked to articulate the reasoning behind their positioning.
Building on the first exercise, Activity 2 continues to develop the children's ability to sequence numbers. Starting from their grouped positions in Activity 1, the children are instructed to arrange themselves in ascending order within their groups. Subsequently, the groups are merged in pairs, and the children must work collaboratively to maintain the correct order in their new, larger groups. This process is repeated until all children are combined into a single ordered line. To deepen their comprehension, children are prompted to explain why they are standing in their particular spot. For an added challenge, variations include performing the sorting task silently and sorting in both ascending and descending order. These activities aim to meet the objective of ordering and comparing numbers to at least 10,000,000, fostering both individual and group participation (denoted by W G P).
