Money - Count money pounds - Starter
Maths Resource Description
During the Spring term, Year 3 students are presented with a variety of mathematical challenges to enhance their numeracy skills. One of the tasks involves counting money in pounds, where students must accurately determine the total value of coins presented to them. This practical exercise helps to build their understanding of currency and its value. Additionally, they engage in a 'Fluent in Four' revision activity, which is designed to consolidate their arithmetic skills through quick-fire questions. For instance, they might be asked to find the difference between numbers to reach a target figure or to calculate half of a given number after subtracting specific units, tens, and hundreds.
The lesson also includes a reading comprehension element, where students learn to apply their mathematical knowledge to real-world scenarios. They are given a scenario where Esin has read a portion of a book and must calculate the remaining pages to be read to finish the book. This not only tests their subtraction skills but also helps them understand fractions and percentages in a tangible context. Furthermore, the students are asked to identify the fraction of an area that has been coloured in, which aids in visualising and understanding fractions as part of a whole. These diverse activities are aimed at reinforcing their arithmetic abilities while also introducing practical applications of maths in everyday situations.
