Money - Count money pounds - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In this Year 3 maths lesson, the focus is on counting money in pounds as part of the Autumn term's Measurement: Money unit. Students will familiarise themselves with the pound sterling symbol (£) and learn to count with £1, £2, £5, £10, and £20 denominations, staying within the limit of £100. The lesson plan includes a variety of resources such as differentiated worksheets, teaching slides, and physical money, which are complemented by key vocabulary like 'coins', 'pounds', 'pence', 'value', 'greater', and 'less'. The session begins with a recap of number bonds to 100, setting the stage for understanding the value of different combinations of coins and notes. Independent learning activities encourage hands-on practice, while partner work and class discussions help to deepen understanding.
Throughout the lesson, students engage in a series of activities that build on each other. They start by identifying pounds and their symbols, then progress to counting the value of coins and notes in various increments. Bar models are introduced as a visual tool to aid in calculating total amounts and understanding the concept of equality in equations. As students work through the activities, they are encouraged to use reasoning and problem-solving skills, such as identifying errors in given totals and understanding the significance of counting in sequences. The lesson concludes with a reflection on what was learned and the strategies that were helpful. Differentiation is evident, with activities tailored to guide students working towards expected levels of understanding, as well as those ready to tackle greater depth challenges, such as counting mixed value pounds and completing more complex bar models.
