Time - Hours and days - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In the second week of a Year 2 summer term lesson on Time, students explore the concept of hours in a day. The lesson utilises mini clocks with moveable hands, worksheets, and a presentation to aid learning. Key vocabulary such as 'midday', 'midnight', 'hour', and 'minute' is introduced, with vocabulary cards and definitions available to support understanding. The class begins with a starter activity where children use the mini clocks to show 'past' and 'to' times, reinforcing their ability to tell the time to the nearest five minutes through practical examples. They are encouraged to use storytelling to explain their reasoning, such as determining how long Tia has until her lessons start after her walk to school.
During independent learning, children work in pairs to draw clock hands representing every hour in the day, discussing the significance of midday and midnight and why each occurs twice in a 24-hour period. Group work involves creating a timeline of their day with post-it notes, from waking up to going to bed, and drawing clocks for each activity. This exercise helps them understand the daily sequence of events and time durations. The lesson also includes counting in fives to 60, using an interactive clock to visualise the minutes in an hour, and exercises converting hours and minutes to minutes only. The plenary session involves reflection where children consider what they've learned, the skills they've used, and what they found challenging. Differentiated activities cater to varying levels of understanding, from matching hours as bars to converting activities and their duration into hours and minutes, ensuring all students work towards, meet, or exceed expected learning outcomes.
