Time - Hours and days - Presentation
Maths Resource Description
In a comprehensive exploration of time, students delve into the concepts of hours and days through a series of engaging activities. The lesson commences with a discussion on the number of hours in a full day and the number of minutes in an hour. Activity 1 challenges children to illustrate each hour on a clock, starting from midnight, to visualise the 24 hours that make up a full day. To reinforce their understanding, students are tasked with drawing the clock hands, ensuring the minute hand remains on 12 while the hour hand advances incrementally with each hour.
Moving on to Activity 2, pupils use clocks to demonstrate how many minutes there are in an hour, with a focus on converting hours and minutes into minutes alone. This activity extends their knowledge by asking them to calculate times such as "1 hour and 10 minutes" in just minutes. In Activity 3, they convert various activity durations from minutes into hours and minutes, applying their skills to real-life scenarios such as sports games. Throughout the lesson, reasoning tasks challenge students to critically evaluate statements about time, such as the misconception that a day contains only 12 hours. Independent work further cements their learning, as they draw clock hands to show every hour of the day and match bar models to the correct times, thereby enhancing their fluency in time measurement.
