Max Maths, Year 6, Learn together, Estimating and measuring angles (2)
Maths Resource Description
Within the Year 6 curriculum, students are taught how to measure the size of angles using a protractor, a tool that allows for precise readings in degrees. A protractor typically has two sets of scales – the inner and outer scales – which can be used to measure angles accurately. For example, when measuring angle LMN using the inner scale of a protractor, it is determined to be 50°. This foundational skill is essential for understanding and classifying different types of angles based on their size.
Students are introduced to four distinct types of angles: acute, right, obtuse, and reflex. An acute angle, such as MNO, measures less than 90°. A right angle, exemplified by PQR, is exactly 90°. An obtuse angle is one that exceeds 90° but is less than 180°, like angle o. Lastly, a reflex angle, such as angle t, is defined as any angle greater than 180° but less than a full circle, which is 360°. Through hands-on practice with a protractor, students learn to measure and identify these angles, enriching their understanding of geometric principles.
