Which are London and the UK's significant buildings? - Presentation
Geography Resource Description
In an educational unit exploring the architectural heritage of London and the wider United Kingdom, students are encouraged to delve into the significance of various iconic buildings. The focus is on twelve notable structures within London, and the learning activity is designed to be collaborative, with students working in groups of four. Each student selects one building from each of the three designated groups, ensuring that collectively, the group will research all twelve buildings. The buildings range from historical landmarks such as Windsor Castle, St Paul's Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey to modern marvels like The Shard and The O2 Arena. The aim of the activity is to culminate in an exhibition showcasing the groups' knowledge about these London buildings.
Extending beyond London, the unit also prompts students to consider significant buildings within their own localities, be it a village or the nearest city. They are tasked with researching buildings within a 30km radius of their school, documenting the history, location, and interesting facts about each one. This encourages students to appreciate the importance of architecture in their immediate environment. The educational approach is hands-on, fostering a sense of discovery and connection to the built heritage of both the capital city and the students' local areas.
