Significant buildings in London - Research task
Geography Resource Description
In a collaborative research task designed to explore the architectural marvels of London, students are invited to form groups of four and delve into the history and significance of some of the city's most iconic buildings. Each participant is tasked with selecting one building from three predefined groups, ensuring that by the end of the activity, each group member will have researched three significant structures. The buildings are categorised as follows: Group A includes historical landmarks such as Windsor Castle, St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London; Group B features cultural institutions like the Natural History Museum, Tate Britain, Royal Albert Hall, and the Houses of Parliament; Group C comprises modern architectural feats including The Shard, The Gherkin, St Pancras Station, and the O2 Arena.
The research findings will be meticulously documented, leading to the creation of a comprehensive booklet containing 12 entries—one for each building studied by the group. This compilation of knowledge will not only serve as a testament to the group's understanding of London's architectural heritage but is also intended for display in an exhibition showcasing each group's insights into the capital's significant buildings. The activity aims to answer pertinent questions such as why London is the capital city of the United Kingdom and to highlight the structures that contribute to the UK's national identity. This educational task, provided by Focus Education (UK) Ltd, offers a unique opportunity for students to engage with the city's rich history and diverse architectural landscape.
