Spelling - Home learning - Sound oo
English Resource Description
The home learning activity is designed to help children practise spelling words with the 'oo' sound, which is pronounced as a long 'oo'. The spelling lists are differentiated and include a challenge word, 'noodles', to extend learning. Blank boxes are provided for any additional words educators or parents may want the children to learn. The lists feature words such as 'zoo', 'proof', 'food', 'gloomy', 'moon', 'scoop', 'soon', 'bamboo', 'roof', and 'moody'. These lists are aimed at reinforcing the 'oo' sound in a variety of contexts.
Alongside the spelling lists, the home learning activity includes a 'Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check' exercise. This method encourages children to study the word ('Look'), pronounce it ('Say'), cover it to test memory ('Cover'), attempt to write it from memory ('Write'), and then compare their attempt to the correct spelling ('Check'), making note of any errors ('Correction'). Furthermore, the activity incorporates 'Read and Match' tasks where children can match words to pictures and use them in sentences, enhancing their understanding of each word's meaning and context. Additionally, a 'Real and Nonsense words' activity is included, where children can identify real words with the 'oo' sound and use them in sentences, while marking nonsense words, such as 'ploop' and 'yodoop', with a cross. These engaging exercises are designed to improve spelling proficiency and phonemic awareness with the 'oo' sound in a fun and interactive way.
