Spelling - Home learning - Sound er (unstressed)
English Resource Description
For home learning, students are provided with differentiated spelling lists that focus on the sound 'er' when it is unstressed in words. The lists include a variety of common words such as 'better', 'understand', 'letter', 'sitter', 'winter', 'summer', 'dinner', 'thicker', 'sister', and 'number'. To extend their learning, students are also given a challenge word, 'another'. Blank boxes accompany the lists for any additional words that educators may want to include for practice.
As part of the learning process, students are encouraged to use the 'Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check' method to reinforce their spelling skills. This technique involves looking at the word, saying it aloud, covering it, attempting to write it from memory, and then checking to see if they have spelled it correctly. Corrections can be made in the space provided. Additionally, the 'Read and Match' activity allows students to engage with the words by writing sentences using the words from the list. For a fun twist, the 'Real and Nonsense words' section challenges students to identify real words and use them in a sentence, while marking the nonsense words, thus enhancing their ability to distinguish between actual words and made-up ones with the 'er' sound.
