Inspired by: Harry and the Jaggedy Daggers - Medium Term Plan
English Resource Description
In the Year 3 literacy module focusing on "Harry and The Jaggedy Daggers" by Jan Fearnley, the six-week medium-term plan is designed to enhance students' comprehension, composition, and grammar skills through a variety of engaging objectives and teacher ideas. In the first week, the objective is to encourage participation in discussions about the book, where students take turns and listen attentively. They will also delve into narrative writing by creating settings, characters, and plots, and will be introduced to the use of paragraphs to group related material. The lesson might involve exploring a map of Bottlenose Bay and The Old Boathouse to inspire their writing.
As the weeks progress, students will retrieve information from non-fiction texts, with a focus on using simple organisational devices in non-narrative material during the second week. They will learn about using conjunctions and adverbs to express time and cause, with activities possibly centred around The Harbour Boats, Cargo, and Harbour Safety. By the sixth week, the plan aims to have students identifying main ideas across multiple paragraphs and summarising them, organising paragraphs around a theme, and choosing nouns or pronouns for clarity and cohesion. Activities may include engaging with the themes of Slowly But Surely, A Flotilla Of Friends, and Harry The Hero. Throughout the six weeks, students will progressively build a varied vocabulary and a range of sentence structures, culminating in a comprehensive understanding of the text and the ability to express their ideas both orally and in writing.
