Inspired by: Harry and the Jaggedy Daggers - Curriculum Objectives
English Resource Description
In the context of the curriculum objectives inspired by "Harry and the Jaggedy Daggers," pupils are expected to develop a positive attitude towards reading and a comprehensive understanding of texts. This includes engaging with a broad spectrum of literature, such as fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction, and reference materials. They should learn to read different types of books for various purposes and use dictionaries to clarify the meanings of unfamiliar words. Familiarity with a diverse range of literary works, including fairy tales, myths, and legends, is encouraged, with an emphasis on orally retelling these stories. Pupils will explore the themes and conventions within these texts, prepare and perform poems and play scripts, and discuss language that captures the imagination. They will also learn to recognise different forms of poetry and understand texts independently by checking comprehension, discussing meanings, asking questions, making inferences, predicting outcomes, summarising ideas, and identifying how language and structure contribute to meaning. Additionally, they will learn to retrieve information from non-fiction and participate in discussions about books they read independently or are read to them.
Furthermore, pupils are taught to expand their vocabulary by applying their knowledge of root words, prefixes, and suffixes, as well as reading and understanding exception words with unusual spelling-sound correspondences. They will also work on spelling homophones, commonly misspelt words, and use dictionaries to check spellings. Writing skills are developed through planning, drafting, evaluating, and editing their work, with a focus on structure, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation. Pupils will compose sentences orally, organise paragraphs, create narrative elements, use organisational devices, and read their writing aloud. They will also learn to extend sentence structures using a range of conjunctions, perfect verb forms, appropriate nouns and pronouns for clarity, conjunctions for expressing time and cause, and fronted adverbials. Grammatical terms will be used accurately in discussions about writing and reading. Additionally, pupils will improve their handwriting by practising joining letters, increasing legibility, and maintaining consistency in their writing.
