Science presenter Rani Price meets two scientists from Reaction Engines Limited, involved in developing a new type of jet engine that could power commercial space flights. The engine, Sabre, is being developed by British scientists and engineers. It is a hybrid between a conventional jet engine, and a rocket system powered by liquid oxygen.

The spacecraft, called Skylon, will be reusable like an aeroplane, with no need to jettison expensive fuel tanks during the launch. However, the compression of air at Mach 5 causes superheating, so the engine will need to be cooled using a cryogenic heat exchanger. This engine technology could also dramatically cut the duration of long haul flights between countries and continents. The two engineers also describe their science education and career motivation.

Teaching Physics or Design?

The clip could be used as a stimulus for a research project into the effectiveness of different types of engines and fuels. Students could begin with burning hydrocarbons, then hydrogen before oxygen. They could expand their research to include the forces acting upon the aircraft at different points. "Why is it shaped the way it is when there is no air in space?" would be a thought-provoking question.

Felix Baumgartner's mission depended on one of the least heralded but most remarkable pieces of equipment - a balloon. To take him 24 miles above the earth’s surface, Felix flew the largest manned balloon ever. It was as tall as a fifty-storey building and held 30 million cubic feet of helium. So even before Felix jumped he had entered the record books.

You could use this clip to stimulate a discussion about air density. Students could be asked to consider why the balloon is filled with helium or why decreasing atmospheric pressure has an effect on the balloon's shape. Students could also talk about the effects of weather conditions on similar projects. This is the second of six clips from ‘The Science of a Space Dive’ and could be used in conjunction with the others.

Dr Kevin Fong explains how sound waves could pose a real threat to astronauts and rockets in space. He uses the example of the Soyuz Rocket, and explains that as it travels through the atmosphere, the air pressure can pose a number of dangers. One of these threats comes from vibrations, including sound. When the sound waves are at the resonant frequency of the rocket, they could destroy it. Kevin first uses audience members to listen to the resonant frequency of a wine glass and then sing it back into a microphone. The microphone is connected to a loudspeaker below the wine glass, which eventually resonates and shatters when the correct frequency is sung.

You could ask students if they have heard about the phenomenon where a wine glass is shattered by an opera singer. Ask them if they have seen this. After watching the clip, ask them to suggest why the woman succeeded in breaking the glass but the girl did not. This could be due to the higher amplitude (loudness) of the woman’s voice, or perhaps a pitch more closely matched to the resonant frequency of the glass.

Kevin Fong asks for a volunteer from the audience who would be happy to drink a sample of his urine. He is surprised when some children volunteer and explains that urine is a waste product from the body which contains chemicals which in large quantities are harmful to us. He then demonstrates a urine recycling system based on osmosis. A concentrated syrup is placed on one side of a semi-permeable membrane and urine is placed on the other side. Over time, osmosis draws water from the urine into the syrup, which can then be drunk by an astronaut. Kevin drinks the liquid that results, and concludes that while the output from the urine-recycling bag is safe to drink, it still smells like urine and still tastes a bit like it too!

Key Stage 3: You could ask students where urine comes from and what it contains. Ask them to suggest why it would be harmful to drink urine. Then watch the clip and ask them to discuss their thoughts afterwards.

Key Stage 4: Before watching the clip, you could ask students to discuss the principles and applications of osmosis in pairs. After watching the clip, you could ask them whether they would drink the product from the bag and if they can suggest some explanations for Kevin’s observation that the product still smelled and tasted like urine (eg there might have been a leak in the membrane).

Dr Kevin Fong uses an audience member to demonstrate the effect on the human body of going into space without a spacesuit.

He uses a marshmallow to model the boy’s head, a glass of water to model his stomach contents and a balloon to model his lungs. These items are placed inside a bell jar, which is then evacuated using a pump. The marshmallow expands, the balloon bursts and the water boils at its existing temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. Kevin explains that boiling is not solely caused by increasing temperature.

Kevin Fong explains that when astronauts leave Earth, they leave behind the protection that our atmosphere offers from many types of radiation. Aboard the International Space Station, UK astronaut Tim Peake monitors his radiation exposure using a TimePix detector. Using a student from the audience to help, Kevin shows that a Geiger-Muller tube can be used to detect ionising radiation; a laboratory notebook used by the scientist who developed medical X-ray imaging technology is found to be highly radioactive. But the detectors used by astronauts can detect not just the number of particles that hit them, but also the types of ionising particle that hit them, and Kevin demonstrates this on screen.

Over footage of astronauts leaving the International Space Station, Tim Peake explains the process of returning them safely to Earth in the Soyuz capsule. He discusses the physical forces at work; how once the capsule has slowed down gravity pulls it back to Earth, friction makes it glow white-hot on re-entry, and how the angle must be carefully calculated so it neither bounces off the Earth’s atmosphere nor burns up. Science presenter Fran Scott explains how air resistance in the atmosphere slows the capsule down, but creates huge amounts of friction. Tim Peake explains how the constant noise of machines on the International Space Station is a contrast to the utter silence of a space walk. Science presenter Fran Scott uses an alarm clock to demonstrate why you can’t hear anything in space. She uses a pump to create a vacuum around it, so we can no longer hear the alarm ringing. Key Stage 3 (Physics) - engage pupils with the current mission to the International Space Station focusing on British astronaut Tim Peake. This can supplement an introduction to sound, waves and space. They can try and recreate this classic experiment in the classroom.

These clips are suitable for teaching Science at KS2, and Physics at KS3 and KS4 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, they are relevant for Science at 2nd,3rd and 4th Level, and Physics at National 4 and 5.
