What are the functions of different parts of the flowering plant? - teacher's notes
Science Resource Description
In the Year 3 curriculum, teachers are encouraged to build upon the foundational knowledge pupils have acquired in Years 1 and 2 about plants. The objective is to deepen their understanding of the specific functions that different parts of a plant serve. The lesson plan focuses on exploring the roles of roots, stems, leaves, and flowers. Teachers are advised to strike a balance between imparting knowledge and facilitating pupil-led discovery, ensuring that learning is experiential and engaging.
Various resources are suggested to aid in teaching these concepts. For instance, Appendix 1 is recommended for lessons on roots, detailing their role in anchoring the plant and absorbing water and nutrients. Appendices 2a and 2b are to be used for studying the stem, including its cross-section, to familiarize pupils with the internal structure and vocabulary related to water transportation within the plant. Additionally, the lesson plan includes references to educational videos available online that delve into the functions of leaves, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of how different plant parts contribute to healthy growth and development.
