Planting - Lesson Plan
Science Resource Description
In a structured science lesson, students in Year Two will explore the growth conditions necessary for seeds and bulbs to germinate. They will be engaging with key KS1 science skills, including observing over time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying, comparative testing, and researching using secondary resources. The lesson is preparatory in nature, setting the stage for ongoing observations of plant growth. Pupils are introduced to the idea that experiments do not always yield immediate results, particularly when studying plant growth, which requires patience and consistent observation over time. Each week, they will observe, record data, and photograph their plants, ensuring each bag or pot is correctly labelled to reflect the specific conditions—whether on a windowsill for light or in a freezer. This meticulous data collection is crucial for the analysis that will take place in a subsequent lesson, Lesson 2.14 – Plant Growth.
The practical aspect of the lesson involves pupils placing seeds or bulbs in bags with either dry or wet cotton wool, then situating them in different environments to observe the effects of these conditions on germination. This hands-on activity requires a range of equipment, including cress seeds, pea seeds, daffodil bulbs, small resealable bags, and cotton wool. Health and safety considerations are highlighted, such as allergen awareness, handwashing after handling soil, and managing slip hazards from spills. The students' task is to monitor the growth, maintain the moisture levels for those in wet conditions, and regularly document their findings through both written records and photographs. The lesson plan is detailed and methodical, ensuring a clear understanding of the scientific process and the variables affecting plant growth, setting the foundation for future lessons where the results will be thoroughly examined and discussed.
