Week 3, lesson 3 Spelling Two Syllable Words - Phonics Phase 4- Lesson plan
English Resource Description
The third day of week three's lesson plan in the All Aboard Phonics programme is dedicated to teaching Year 1 students how to spell two-syllable words. The lesson begins with the clear objective of mastering the spelling of such words. The session starts by revisiting previously learned graphemes and pictophones through a 'Quickdash' activity, where children rapidly identify the phonemes associated with each grapheme and pictophone displayed, gradually increasing in speed to reinforce their recall.
During the teaching phase, the instructor introduces a two-syllable word, such as 'desktop', and demonstrates clapping for each syllable, encouraging the children to follow suit. This clapping exercise is repeated with additional words like 'shellfish' and 'upset'. The children are then guided to identify the phonemes within each syllable, and the corresponding graphemes are written down to construct the whole word. The practice phase involves a 'Word Breaker' activity, where the children segment a two-syllable word into its syllables and phonemes, then blend them back together. The lesson concludes with an application activity, where children use mini whiteboards to write down two-syllable words dictated by the teacher, such as 'sandpit' and 'sunlight', allowing them to apply their phonics knowledge in a practical spelling task.
