Week 1, lesson 5 Review Day: CVCC Words - Phonics Phase 4 - Lesson plan
English Resource Description
The fifth day of Week 1 in the phonics curriculum is dedicated to reviewing CVCC words—consonant-vowel-consonant-consonant structures—alongside tricky words that do not follow standard phonetic rules. The objective of the lesson is to reinforce the children's abilities to read and spell these CVCC words, as well as to recognise and correctly use tricky words. The lesson begins with a 'Letter Pops' activity, where children are given grapheme cards and are asked to quickly respond by holding up the corresponding card when a phoneme is called out, aiding in the recognition and recall of phonemes they have learned.
During the 'Teach' phase, the instructor writes a selection of words on the board, including both CVCC words and tricky words, such as 'lift', 'she', 'damp', and 'said'. The class then works together to decode and blend the sounds to read the words aloud. This is followed by a 'Practise' activity named 'Word Match Lines', where children are divided into two groups. One group receives object flashcards, while the other is given word flashcards. The child with the word flashcard decodes their word and then matches it with the corresponding object image held by a child in the opposite line. The lesson culminates with an 'Apply' activity called 'Yes/No', where children use YES or NO cards to answer decoded phrases, encouraging them to apply their phonics knowledge in a decision-making context. Volunteers are invited to read each phrase to the class, further reinforcing their learning.
