Rounders - Lesson 4
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of a Year 6 rounders unit, students focus on understanding and demonstrating the key rules of the game. The lesson's learning objectives include grasping the rules for running around the bases, knowing how to score rounders and half rounders, and understanding effective fielding strategies. Key vocabulary terms such as '1st base only', 'out at 1st base', 'backstop', 'no-ball', and 'wide' are introduced. The equipment needed for this lesson comprises hoops, rounders balls and bats, cones, and rounders bases. The warm-up activity involves hoop bowling, where students practice underarm bowling through a hoop, with the roles of bowler, backstop, and hoop holder rotating among the group members. An extension of this activity includes a batter aiming to hit the ball back to the bowler, with variations in the distance between players.
The main part of the lesson, lasting 40 minutes, is divided into two activities. The first is 'Out At 1st Base', where students are split into groups to practice batting and fielding, with the aim of either the ball or the pupil reaching 1st base first to score points. The second activity, 'Home Run', involves setting up a full rounders pitch where batters try to complete a full rounder after striking the ball, while fielders work to stump them out. Key teaching points include the requirement for batters to continue their run if they leave a base and must touch 4th base to confirm their rounder. The lesson concludes with a cool-down discussion where groups feedback one rule of rounders they have learned, covering aspects such as bowling technique, scoring, and base running. These activities help students to apply the rules of rounders in a practical setting, enhancing their understanding and skills in the game.
