Gymnastics 3 - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 6 Gymnastics (3) unit is an engaging and comprehensive programme that aims to enhance pupils' gymnastic abilities through a series of structured lessons. It focuses on the development of floor and apparatus routines, incorporating balancing and travelling movements. Pupils will have the opportunity to create and perform individual routines, as well as collaborate with partners to produce mirroring routines on the apparatus. The unit builds on the foundational skills acquired in earlier gymnastics units, culminating in an assessment where students demonstrate the skills they have honed over the year.
Each lesson within the unit has specific learning objectives and success criteria. The first lesson targets the creation of a floor routine, combining point balances, shapes, and travel. The second lesson progresses to partner work, where pupils match and link movements to form a routine together. Subsequent lessons involve apparatus work, where students must use their initiative to travel and balance, and eventually perform to an audience. The final two lessons are dedicated to individual assessments, encouraging pupils to perform with control and to self-assess their performances. Teaching tips provided in the unit overview suggest practical considerations for lesson timings, equipment setup, and safety rules, ensuring a smooth and safe learning experience for all involved.
