Gymnastics 3 - Lesson 6
Physical Education Resource Description
In the sixth lesson of Year 6 Gymnastics, part of the Striver Lesson Plans, students are expected to demonstrate and compile the gymnastic skills they've learned, using various apparatus for an individual assessment. The learning objectives are clear: pupils should be able to perform in an assessment environment, showcasing their abilities in balances, jumps, vaults, and travels, as well as self-assess their own performance. Essential vocabulary for the lesson includes terms like 'assessment', 'apparatus', 'vaulting', 'jumping', 'balancing', and 'travelling'. The equipment needed for this lesson includes mats, springboards, vaults, wall bars, benches, and tables, with optional printouts of Pupil Self-Assessment sheets. The warm-up involves a fun 'beans' game where students mimic various bean-related actions to get their bodies ready for the session.
The main activity of the lesson is the assessment, which is formatted similarly to the previous lesson. Students are divided into groups and rotate around four stations, each focusing on different skills such as climbing and balancing on wall bars, jumps and leaps on mats, travelling and shapes on benches, and vaulting techniques. Each pupil is given an assessment sheet to self-evaluate their skills, using a simple traffic light system: red for skills not yet acquired, amber for those needing improvement, and green for those performed confidently. Teachers are advised to position themselves centrally to observe all pupils and assist with assessments. The lesson concludes with a cool-down where students reflect on the assessment and discuss their experiences and challenges throughout the gymnastics unit, either as a class or in pairs.
