Dance - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 6 Dance (1) unit provided in the Striver Lesson Plans is a comprehensive guide to teaching dance with a focus on Street Art. This unit encourages pupils to develop their dance movements, phrases, and choreographed routines. Prior to this unit, students should already be familiar with various dance movements and skills, understanding how to link these movements into dance phrases for group and class performances, including both choreographed and improvised routines. They should also be comfortable with techniques like dancing in unison and executing canon movements. The aim is to engage all pupils in dance, enhancing their body awareness, creativity, and choreographic and performance skills, as well as their appreciation of dance.
As part of the unit, pupils will learn through a medium-term plan that outlines specific learning objectives and success criteria across six lessons. They will start by performing simple movements inspired by using a spray can, progressing to more complex phrases and incorporating parkour movements. The use of gymnastic equipment is integrated for creating improvised movements. Throughout the unit, safety considerations are emphasized, and teachers are advised on lesson timings and class management. The culmination of the unit is a choreographed dance narrative that allows pupils to showcase their skills, with self-assessment and feedback playing a crucial role in their learning process.
