Athletics - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
In the second lesson of an athletics series for Year 5 students, the aim is to develop the skills needed for jumping for distance, focusing specifically on the triple jump. The lesson is structured with clear learning objectives that include mastering different jumping techniques, performing a triple jump, and competing in a competitive environment. The success criteria ensure that pupils can demonstrate these skills effectively. Essential vocabulary for the lesson includes terms such as "jump," "hop," and "skip," and the necessary equipment comprises marker cones, a large dice, and a line to mark the finishing point.
The session begins with a 10-minute warm-up where pupils navigate around randomly placed marker cones, paying attention to avoid collisions while performing various jumps on the teacher's command. The main part of the lesson, lasting 30 minutes, starts with a demonstration of the triple jump sequence, either through a video clip of an Olympic athlete or with the aid of a graphic. Pupils then engage in "Dice Jump," a game where they roll a dice to determine a sequence of hop, step, or jump movements to be performed by the team. The lesson focuses on practising each stage of the triple jump: the hop, step, and jump manoeuvres, with key teaching points highlighted for each. A Triple Jump Grid is set out to help pupils visualise and perform the sequence effectively, with variations and adjustments made according to the pupils' abilities. The lesson concludes with a 10-minute cool down that includes a variety of movements and stretches to ensure pupils end the session with proper muscle relaxation.
