Gymnastics 3 - Lesson 1
Physical Education Resource Description
The first lesson of Gymnastics 3 for Year 4 pupils aims to develop their ability to perform mirroring actions along various pathways and levels. The success of the lesson is measured by the pupils' ability to follow different pathways, mirror a partner along these pathways, and use apparatus to enhance their mirroring skills. Key vocabulary for the lesson includes terms such as pathways, mirroring, travelling, synchronisation, and timing. Essential equipment and resources for this session include cones to mark pathways, pathway maps, mats for floor exercises, gym tables, benches, and beams to assist with mirroring actions using apparatus.
The lesson begins with a warm-up where the area is divided into 12 sections, each depicting a different pathway. Pupils individually navigate these pathways, initially walking to familiarise themselves with the route and then changing their mode of travel for subsequent sections. The main activity involves pairs of pupils mirroring each other's movements halfway along the pathway, starting side-by-side or opposite each other. The lesson progresses to group mirroring, where groups of four create mirrored balances, each taking turns to lead. The session concludes with a cool-down involving pairs of pupils facing each other in a front support position, mirroring hand movements in a press-up style activity. Throughout the lesson, key teaching points focus on maintaining good body posture, straight arms and legs, and controlled movements.
