Basketball - Lesson 5
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fifth lesson of a Year 4 basketball series, students aim to enhance their ability to pass and dribble effectively within a game context. The lesson's learning objectives are focused on the development of skills necessary to position oneself to receive a pass and to pass the ball while on the move. Key terms such as 'pass', 'catch', 'pivot', 'target', 'bounce pass', 'chest pass', and 'receive' are introduced, ensuring pupils are familiar with the terminology relevant to the session. The required equipment for this lesson includes a class set of basketballs and cones to facilitate the planned activities.
The warm-up activity involves half of the class dribbling basketballs inside the court while the other half stands outside. Those inside pass the ball to a pupil on the outside using a chest or bounce pass and then switch places, promoting continuous movement and skill application. To add complexity, pupils waiting on the outside also dribble, enhancing their multitasking abilities. The main part of the lesson is dedicated to applying these skills in a game called 'End Zone', where points are scored by receiving a pass within the opponent's end zone. This game encourages strategic movement and teamwork, and regular pauses are taken to discuss tactics and potential improvements. The session concludes with a cool-down activity where pupils reflect on the techniques observed and identify areas for personal development in future sessions.
