Basketball - Lesson 1
Physical Education Resource Description
In the first lesson of a Year 4 basketball module, the objective is to introduce pupils to the basic skill of dribbling. The success of the lesson is measured by the pupils' ability to control the ball while dribbling and their proficiency in keeping their heads up to maintain awareness of their surroundings. The key terms introduced in this session include 'bounce', 'sideline', 'baseline', 'sprint', and 'head', which are crucial for understanding the movements and rules of the game. To facilitate this lesson, a class set of basketballs and cones are required.
The lesson begins with a warm-up where pupils jog around the basketball court, familiarising themselves with its main lines and areas, such as the baselines and sidelines. The instructor will intermittently call out commands, prompting the pupils to sprint to a specific line and then return to jogging. This activity is designed to increase their heart rate and prepare them for the session. In the main part of the lesson, pupils learn that in basketball, when they receive the ball, they have the option to shoot, pass, or dribble. The emphasis is placed on dribbling without looking at the ball, using the fingers for control and keeping one hand on the ball at a time. The lesson features a 'Traffic Light' game to help pupils practice dribbling in response to visual cues. For those who are ready for a challenge, they are encouraged to dribble with their weaker hand and practice switching the ball from one hand to the other. The session concludes with a 'Bop It' cool-down activity, where pupils respond to various commands to help relax their muscles after the main activity.
