Dance 2 - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 3 Dance 2 unit is a vibrant and engaging series of lesson plans that focus on the exciting theme of the circus. Pupils will have the opportunity to select and explore a wide array of movements that resonate with the lively circus atmosphere. Throughout the unit, they will learn, rehearse, and perform dance phrases both as individual groups and as a class. This unit builds on their prior knowledge of dance movements and phrases, allowing them to delve deeper into the creative process of dance, and encourages them to express their thoughts and opinions on their own work, as well as that of their peers.
Each lesson is structured to fit within a one-hour timeframe, which includes time for pupils to change at the beginning and end of the session. Teachers are advised to adjust timings if necessary for shorter lessons. Safety is paramount, with the use of gymnastics mats and the removal of shoes and socks recommended for each session. A clear signal from the teacher ensures that pupils stop and listen when required. The lesson plans suggest mixing boys and girls of varying abilities in dance partners or groups, maintaining these combinations for the final performance. The overarching goal is to foster a love for dance, enhance body awareness, creativity, and choreographic skills, and develop performance abilities and appreciation. The unit aims to create a supportive environment where pupils can confidently discuss and critique dance work, working in sync with partners and larger groups to a variety of rhythms.
