Athletics - Lesson 6
Physical Education Resource Description
In the sixth lesson of the Year 2 Athletics series, the students are set to learn and improve their jumping skills, specifically focusing on jumping for distance. The lesson's learning objectives are clear: pupils should be able to perform a two-footed horizontal jump to gain distance, land accurately on designated targets, and attempt a standing triple jump. The success criteria are designed to ensure that each student can meet these objectives by the lesson's end. Key vocabulary such as 'jumping', 'distance', 'long jump', 'triple jump', 'balance', and 'control' is introduced to enrich the students' understanding. Essential equipment for the activities includes cones, hoops, gym mats, and flat markers, all of which facilitate the different jumping exercises planned for the session.
The lesson starts with a warm-up game called 'Unlock the Path', where pupils work in groups to throw beanbags into hoops, aiming to remove cones from them to clear a path to the centre space. This activity not only serves as a recap of the previous lesson but also encourages teamwork and reinforces underarm throwing techniques. Following the warm-up, the main part of the lesson involves four rotation activities centred around jumping for distance: 'Lily-pads', 'Long jump', 'Triple jump', and 'Stepping stones'. Each activity is designed to challenge the pupils and help them understand the mechanics of jumping, such as swinging arms for momentum and bending knees for take-off. Teachers are advised to demonstrate each activity and ensure safety in the setup. The session concludes with a cool down where pupils reflect on their learning over the past six weeks, discussing their achievements and challenges in pairs, which supports peer learning and self-assessment.
