Games 1 - Lesson 1
Physical Education Resource Description
The first lesson of the Games 1 module for Year 1 students aims to enhance their spatial awareness and agility. The lesson's objectives are for pupils to develop the ability to move smoothly while altering both their speed and direction, and to recognize and utilize space effectively during activities. To achieve these goals, the session is structured around a series of dynamic exercises. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes terms such as 'control', 'change direction', 'stop', 'space', and 'pathways'. Essential equipment for the activities includes cones, hoops, circular mats or spots, and hurdles.
The lesson commences with a warm-up game called 'Traffic Jam', where children pretend to be cars navigating a defined area and respond to various commands to change their speed. This is followed by the main activity, which is split into two parts: the Directions Circuit and Relays. In the Directions Circuit, children engage in four movement patterns, including zigzagging sideways, jogging backwards, bunny hops, and stepping stones. The Relays involve races such as slaloming through cones, hopping on spots, jumping hurdles, and running around cones in a star pattern. Each activity is designed to challenge the children's control and balance while moving in different directions. The session concludes with a 'Reaction Game' cool-down, where pupils quickly transition from lying on their backs to standing on their feet upon the teacher's command, practising different starting positions. Throughout the lesson, pupils are encouraged to discuss their experiences and reflect on their control and movement strategies.
