Dance - Lesson 4
Physical Education Resource Description
In Nursery Dance Lesson 4, the objective is to engage children with rhythm and music to identify and embody the movements of different wild animals. The pupils will succeed in the lesson by exploring and copying movements that represent various animals such as lions, elephants, snakes, and monkeys. Key vocabulary for the lesson includes words related to these animals and actions such as 'follow', 'copy', 'stamping', 'slither', and 'swinging'. To facilitate the lesson, the teacher will require photos of wild animals and background music of their choice. The warm-up involves a game of musical statues to help children find their own space and practice control over their bodies, with an assessment of their ability to hold positions on different levels.
The main part of the lesson, lasting 20 minutes, involves the teacher showing pictures of the animals and encouraging the children to independently create actions and sounds that represent each animal. The teacher will then lead the children around the room, narrating an adventure through the wild and prompting them to perform actions corresponding to the animals mentioned. This provides an opportunity to assess the children's ability to follow the leader and copy movements accurately. The cool-down session brings a calming end to the lesson, with children lying on the floor with closed eyes, visualising the animals as the teacher reads out the narrative from the main activity, encouraging them to picture the animals in their mind's eye.
