Medium Term Plan - Rugby - Year 8
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 8 Rugby scheme, planned for six lessons, is meticulously designed to enhance students' application of core rugby skills in a tactical context. The intent is to empower students to select and apply the right skills, using them strategically to outwit opponents, and to deepen their understanding of team strategies in both attack and defence. The curriculum aims to foster an awareness of the sport's rules and to cultivate an advanced knowledge of small-sided games. Students will be exposed to a variety of skills including passing, receiving, ball handling, tackling, dodging, evading, and kicking.
The learning journey is structured to progressively build on the principles of attack and defence. It begins with a focus on refining passing and handling skills, moving on to the development of tackling techniques, and the correct execution of kicks. Students will be encouraged to devise strategies, make decisions, and refine their outcomes, thereby enhancing their problem-solving abilities. The course also emphasises personal development, fostering resilience, sportsmanship, and a lifelong appreciation for health and activity. Through peer observation and analysis, students will learn to evaluate and improve their own and others' performances, with a particular focus on decision making and strategic play. The programme culminates in competitive games that encapsulate the acquired skills, tactical understanding, and rules comprehension, preparing students for potential careers in the sports industry.
