Medium Term Plan - Gymnastics - Year 6
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 6 gymnastics medium term plan spans over six lessons, aiming to develop students' fundamental gymnastic skills, such as travelling, jumping, landing, weight transfer, balancing, rolling, and turning. These skills will be practised both on the floor and on apparatus. The intent is to cultivate control, levels, and aesthetics within creative sequences, while also incorporating evaluation and assessment to enhance these sequences. Additionally, the plan focuses on fostering teamwork and leadership skills and understanding the impact of exercise on health and wellbeing.
The plan outlines a structured progression of learning objectives and tasks. In the first week, pupils focus on replicating basic travelling movements with body tension and extension, and they begin to understand the importance of warm-ups and safety in gymnastics. As weeks progress, the curriculum delves into balances, rolls, jumps, and sequence development, each with specific tasks to encourage mastery of individual and paired skills. By the sixth week, students are expected to compose and assess sequences, demonstrating an appreciation of performance and the ability to improve based on peer feedback. Throughout the lessons, key concepts such as accurate replication, developing physical and mental capacity, decision-making, and personal development are emphasised, alongside cross-curricular links to literacy and numeracy. The impact of the plan is measured by the students' ability to perform with increasing complexity and fluency, and their understanding and use of gymnastic terminology.
