A's and B's Warm up - Gymnastics
Physical Education Resource Description
The "A's and B's Warm up" is an engaging and dynamic exercise designed for gymnastics classes, which encourages pupils to be attentive and responsive. The aim of the activity is for students to work in pairs, sitting back to back, with one student (A) facing the teacher and the other student (B) facing the opposite direction. The teacher will give out instructions for either A or B to perform a specific movement task. These tasks include 'go over', where the player jumps over their crouched partner and then quickly returns to their starting position; 'go through', which involves the player moving through their partner's open legs before swiftly going back; and 'go round', where the player runs around their partner and sits back down.
Once the pupils are familiar with the basic tasks, the teacher ups the ante by calling out a sequence of two, three, or four instructions that the players must execute in the correct order. For example, the teacher might shout "through, over, through, go round", and the pupils must perform these actions in sequence. The focus of this warm-up is on speed and accuracy, but it is important to note that the exercise is non-competitive; despite encouraging quickness and perhaps acknowledging who completes the tasks fastest, no student should be penalised with elimination or made to sit out of the activity. This warm-up not only prepares students physically for the gymnastics session but also mentally sharpens their listening and reaction skills.
