Medium Term Plan - Gymnastics - Year 2
Physical Education Resource Description
The Year 2 Gymnastics medium-term plan, designed for Key Stage 1, spans six lessons with the intent to develop fundamental gymnastics skills such as shape making, turning, jumping, balancing, and travelling. The programme aims to enhance body management skills on the floor and apparatus, fostering an appreciation for good performances and linking exercise intensity with feelings. The curriculum is structured to build upon basic movements, encouraging control and fluency in sequences presented to an audience. Key knowledge includes the replication of movements, linking moves to create sequences, and presenting these sequences fluently. Skills focus on shapes, balances, travelling, jumps, vaulting, and rotation.
The scheme of work progresses from counter balancing and travelling to rotation, balancing on apparatus, and jumping/vaulting, culminating in a session for repetition and assessment. Each week has specific learning objectives and task examples, like creating balances that require support, developing a repertoire of whole-body movements, and refining sequences for performance. The plan emphasises the importance of body tension, control, and creativity in paired sequences. Cross-curricular links include literacy and numeracy, with assessment opportunities through questions and answers, feedback, and discussion. The impact of the programme is measured at three levels: beginning, developing, and exceeding, with outcomes ranging from copying basic actions to using complex movements in sequences and refining performances. The ultimate goal is to nurture physical education and well-being, with a focus on personal development and the ability to evaluate and improve performances.
