Max Maths, Year 5, Try it, Ordering measurements in mixed units
Maths Resource Description
In a practical application of mathematics for Year 5 students, the task is to arrange four parcels in order of weight, from the heaviest to the lightest. The parcels are destined for different locations and their masses are provided in a mix of kilograms and grams. The parcel headed to China weighs 2,430 grams, the one to Gabon is 33.24 kilograms, Malaysia's parcel is 1,843 grams, and the parcel for Bermuda is 13 kilograms and 56 grams. To compare the weights effectively, students are instructed to convert all masses into grams.
The conversion process begins with the Bermuda parcel, where the weight in kilograms is combined with the grams and then multiplied by 1,000 to obtain a uniform measurement in grams. The Gabon parcel, already in kilograms, also requires multiplication by 1,000 to convert it to grams. Once all parcels are expressed in the same unit, students can easily determine the correct order, ensuring the heaviest parcel is at the bottom and the lightest at the top. This exercise not only tests the students' understanding of weight measurement units but also their ability to perform conversions and compare different quantities. For further practice, students are directed to workbook pages 187 to 188.
