Max Maths, Year 5, Learn together, Ordering measurements in mixed units
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 5 maths lesson, students are learning how to order measurements when they're given in mixed units. The lesson aims to teach children how to compare different lengths and heights accurately by converting them all into the same unit. The example provided involves three children with their heights given in different units: one in centimetres, one in metres and centimetres, and one purely in metres. To effectively arrange the children by height from the shortest to the tallest, the class must first standardise the units to metres.
The process of conversion is clearly demonstrated. Toby's height is already in metres at 1.48 m. Han's height is a combination of metres and centimetres, which translates to 1.53 m when converted to a singular unit. Tya's height, originally given as 141 centimetres, is converted to metres by dividing by 100, resulting in 1.41 m. With all heights now in the same unit, the students can easily determine the order. Tya, being 1.41 m tall, is the shortest, followed by Toby at 1.48 m, and Han is the tallest at 1.53 m. This exercise not only teaches measurement conversion but also helps with understanding how to compare and sequence numerical data.
