Max Maths, Year 3, Try it, Relating fractions to division (2)
Maths Resource Description
In a practical exercise designed for Year 3 students, the concept of relating fractions to division is explored through real-world scenarios. One such scenario involves Han, Jade, and Toby sharing $15 equally between them. The students are prompted to calculate how much money each person will receive. They learn that dividing the total amount by the number of people sharing gives the answer. The activity is presented as a fraction of the total amount, where the total $15 is divided by 3, the number of friends sharing it, to find out the individual share.
The practice section, titled "Let's Practise," encourages students to apply their understanding of fractions and division to various scenarios. They are tasked with finding fractional parts of different whole numbers. For example, students are asked to find one quarter of 12, one tenth of 50, and other similar fractions of given numbers. These exercises help to reinforce the relationship between fractions as division statements and the practical application of dividing a whole into equal parts. Students are encouraged to complete their work on the corresponding workbook pages to further solidify their understanding of the concept.
